Moving Your Stop Loss: When Hope Takes Over

A stop loss is easy to respect before entry. The real test comes when price approaches it and hope starts negotiating.

Most traders understand why a stop exists. The difficulty comes later, when price approaches it and the trade suddenly feels different.

Before entry, the decision is easy

Before the trade, you can define the point where the idea is no longer valid. The book treats the stop as a decision made while calm. Once the position is open, however, the same number is attached to real money and real discomfort.

That is when the temptation begins: move the stop a little farther, give the trade more room, wait for one more candle, or tell yourself that the original idea is still intact.

Hope can sound like analysis

The dangerous part is that moving a stop rarely feels like an emotional decision. It can sound intelligent: the market is noisy; the level was too tight; the bigger trend is still intact.

Sometimes a stop genuinely should be placed differently. The problem is changing it after entry because the trader does not want to accept the planned loss. The reasoning arrives after the discomfort.

The book calls hope one of the most expensive emotions because it can keep a losing trade alive without changing the underlying reason for the trade.

The question to ask

If I were not already in this position, would I choose this new stop today?

This separates a new piece of information from a desire to avoid the original outcome. If the only reason for widening the stop is that the existing one is about to be hit, the decision deserves scrutiny.

A stop is also a promise

The book’s Stop Contract turns the idea into something practical: decide in advance what the stop means, and make the commitment while you are still calm. The purpose is not to make every trade correct. It is to stop the rules from changing simply because the position became uncomfortable.

That is the deeper lesson. A stop does not predict where price will go. It defines what you will do when your original idea is no longer acceptable.
